Standardisation of liquid and gaseous fuels and lubricants
Standards in the field of liquid and gaseous fuels as well as lubricants are developed to make the production, functionality, control, and trade of fuels, lubricants, and hydraulic fluids safer, simpler, and more efficient. They are used to ensure quality and safety, facilitate access to different markets, and create uniform procedures for handling.
The project has covered standardisation of specifications, test methods, and sampling for liquid and gaseous fuels as well as lubricants. A major focus has been on developing specifications for renewable fuels and refining specifications for existing fuel types, including enabling higher blending of renewable components in fossil fuels. This also requires standards for testing and sampling of these products.
Most of the work takes place within European (CEN) and international (ISO) standardisation, where the Swedish Institute for Standards (SIS) is a member. Some European standardisation is based on requests from the EU. The project has also included the development of Swedish standards for areas not covered by CEN or ISO work.
Within SIS, the work has been divided among four technical committees, involving stakeholders from across the industry: producers and distributors of fuels, hydraulic fluids and lubricants, engine manufacturers, testing laboratories, authorities, and research institutes.
During the period June 2022 to May 2025, 89 new or revised standards and publications were issued within the project.
