Biological methanation – Development opportunities for existing biogas plants
The project aims to increase Swedish biogas production through biological methanation at existing plants. The technology converts carbon dioxide in raw biogas into methane using hydrogen, which can boost production by up to 60% without additional feedstock. Furthermore, production can be scaled up by adding syngas from forest residues (through pyrolysis or gasification) to the methanation process. The project maps technical and economic conditions at various existing plants, analyzes system integration, and develops strategies for implementation. The goal is to create resource-efficient, carbon-efficient solutions that strengthen industrial transition, security of supply, and climate benefits. The results will provide a basis for investments and pave the way for demo and full-scale plants in Sweden.
