Biological methanation – Development opportunities for existing biogas plants
The project aims to increase Swedish biogas production through biological methanation at existing plants. The technology converts carbon dioxide present in raw biogas into methane using hydrogen, which can increase production by at least 60% without additional input of feedstock (substrate). Production can be further scaled up by adding syngas from forest residues (via pyrolysis or gasification) to the methanation process.
The project is based on four existing biogas plants and one biochar producer that are partners in the project and represent different types of cases in Sweden, with variations in electricity price area, type of biogas plant, and local conditions for resource utilization and system integration. By building on existing plants, we have access to industry personnel and real process data. This creates a broad understanding of how increased biogas production can be implemented at existing plants and contribute to a more resilient and fossil-free energy system throughout Sweden.
The goal is to create resource-efficient, carbon-efficient solutions that strengthen industrial transition, preparedness, and climate benefits. The results will provide a basis for investments and pave the way for demonstration and full-scale plants in Sweden.
