Bio-based marine fuels for the energy system of the future
The project develops sustainable, bio-based drop-in fuels for the maritime sector through upgrading of pyrolysis oils from Swedish biomass. By combining industrial expertise from Valmet, Pyrocell, and Wärtsilä with RISE’s research capacity as well as participation from the majority of swedish shipping industry (Gotlandsbolaget, Stena Line, Wallenius Marine, Nordic cruiseline) the project will demonstrate production routes that meet marine fuel standards. Experimental work on slurry hydroprocessing and fixed-bed upgrading will identify optimal pathways for efficient deoxygenation and stabilization. Technoeconomic and life-cycle analyses will assess environmental and cost performance. The project supports Sweden’s and the EU’s climate goals by reducing fossil dependence, strengthening energy security, and fostering industrial symbiosis between forestry, technology developers, and shipping operators toward a climate-neutral maritime sector.
