Fuel scenarios for aviation – Climate efficiency, feasibility and policy measures
The overall aim of the project is to (a) outline scenarios for the aviation fuel supply that provide a greatly reduced climate impact compared to the use of fossil fuels, are cost-effective and have a high degree of feasibility, and to (b) analyze suitable combinations of policy measures to realize such scenarios.
There are four main alternatives for fossil-free fuels for aviation; biofuels, electrofuels, hydrogen and electricity. In the project, we will have a systems perspective on how the fuel supply to the aviation sector can unfold if the Paris climate goals are to be reached. One issue we will pay special attention to is how to take into account the reduced high-altitude effect of renewable fuels in the scenarios.
What are fair/efficient distributions of bioenergy between different country groups and sectors, as well as over time, is another important question. Potential conflicts between the use of electrofuels and carbon dioxide storage will also be analyzed.
