SusTainAble biobased fuRan platform for the low carbon industry – STAR

Meeting Swedens’s climate target of net zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2045, requires an urgent transition from fossil to biobased economy wherein renewable biomass residues and waste streams become the industrial feedstock.

The primarly fossil-based chemical industry is the largest industrial energy consumer, and it contributes with 16% of the total greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions.

The goal of the STAR project is to move forward the technology front for development of scalable resource, cost, energy and GHG efficient production of biobased chemicals and materials with focus on furan compounds from lignocellulosic residues.

The STAR project involves stakeholders along the value chain and multidisciplinary group of researchers to perform technology optimization and process design for scale up of HMF production from C6 sugars, transformation of HMF and C5 sugar-based furfural to FDCA for use in recyclable plastics, techno-economic and life cycle assessments and product evaluations.
