Sustainable cultivation of root suckers regenerated hybrid aspen –  Nutrient extraction and plant available nutrients in soil

This project synthesizes and analyzes the unique long-term hybrid aspen trial in southern Sweden to quantify nutrient removal and soil status changes linked to biomass harvesting in root sucker regenerated stands. We compare 4-, 8- and 16-year rotations using stand inventories, biomass functions, wood nutrient analyses (N, P, K, Ca, Mg, S) and repeated soil sampling. The aim of the project is to compile, analyze and publish data on nutrient extraction and soil nutrient balance over time. This can provide a basis for assessing the need for nutrient compensation and a basis for practical guidelines and decision support for landowners and contractors. The project contributes to strengthening sustainable value chains and securing bioenergy supplies.
