BioGraph – Advancing Biobased Graphite Production for Energy technologies

As the world moves toward achieving net-zero emissions, the contradiction between the demand for high-quality graphite products and its unsustainable production process is becoming prominent. It is expected that energy- and resource-efficient biomass utilization as green graphite precursors can address issues such as graphite supply constraints and high energy consumption in traditional graphite production processes.
This project is to use focused laser light to selectively heat and graphitize specific regions of biomass, allowing for tighter control over the graphitization process and the properties of the resulting material. The selection of raw materials and substrate, processing conditions, material quality evaluation and specific testing on energy storage and power devices will be performed. Thus, the energy storage industry would greatly benefit from innovative technologies that convert domestic, low-cost, sustainable, and non-toxic bio-based materials into high quality graphite.
